What is Prompt Engineering and How to Get Into It
Most people think working in AI means writing complex code and building algorithms from scratch. Prompt Engineering proves that assumption wrong.
It is one of the fastest growing roles in tech right now, it requires no engineering degree, and companies are actively hiring for it. Yet most students in India have never heard of it.
At Paathshala, we believe the first step to a good career is knowing your options. So let us break this one down properly.
1. What is Prompt Engineering?
A prompt is the instruction you give to an AI system. Prompt Engineering is the skill of writing those instructions in a way that gets the most accurate, useful, and relevant output from the AI.
Think of it this way. Two people can ask an AI the same question and get completely different results. One person gets a vague, generic answer. The other gets something precise and actionable. The difference is not the AI. It is the quality of the prompt.
Prompt Engineers are the people who have mastered that difference, and who apply it professionally to build better AI products, workflows, and systems.
2. Why is This Role Suddenly in Demand?
Companies across every sector are now using AI tools in their daily operations. Customer support, content creation, legal research, medical documentation, software development, financial analysis. AI is being plugged into all of it.
But AI tools are only as good as the instructions they receive. Businesses realised quickly that having powerful AI is not enough. You need people who know how to use it well, consistently, and at scale.
That created an entirely new job category. And demand has grown faster than supply, which means salaries are strong and competition among candidates is still relatively low.
3. What Does a Prompt Engineer Actually Do?
The day to day work varies by company but typically includes writing and refining prompts for AI tools, testing outputs for accuracy and consistency, building prompt libraries that teams can reuse, working with developers and product teams to integrate AI into workflows, and documenting what works and what does not.
It sits at the intersection of communication, logic, and technology. You do not need to build the AI. You need to know how to talk to it.
4. Who is This Role Suited For?
This is where it gets interesting for students who do not come from a pure tech background.
Prompt Engineering rewards people who think clearly, write well, and understand context. Strong language skills matter more than coding skills. Curiosity about how AI systems work matters more than a computer science degree.
Students from humanities, commerce, psychology, journalism, and design backgrounds are finding their way into this role because the core skill is essentially structured thinking and clear communication.
That said, a basic understanding of how large language models work, and some hands on practice with tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, will give you a real edge.
5. How Do You Get Into It?
You do not need a formal degree to start. Here is a practical path.
Start by using AI tools every day with intention. Do not just ask casual questions. Try to get specific, high quality outputs and notice what prompt structures work better than others.
Take a structured course. Several platforms including Coursera, DeepLearning.AI, and LinkedIn Learning now offer prompt engineering courses, many of them free or low cost.
Build a small portfolio. Document prompts you have written, the outputs they produced, and why certain approaches worked. This is what you show employers.
Apply for roles with AI-first startups, content companies, edtech platforms, and SaaS companies. These are currently the most active hirers for this role in India.
6. What Can You Earn?
Entry level prompt engineering roles in India currently range from โน4 to 10 LPA depending on the company and your skill level. Professionals with one to two years of experience and a strong portfolio are moving into the โน12 to 20 LPA range. Global remote roles, which are increasingly open to Indian candidates, pay significantly higher.
It is still early days for this role in India, which means getting in now puts you ahead of the curve.
Why This Role Actually Matters
Prompt Engineering is not a shortcut or a trend. It is a real, growing profession that sits at the centre of how businesses are adapting to AI.
As AI tools become more embedded in every industry, the people who know how to direct them effectively will become indispensable. Not because they replaced engineers, but because they bridge the gap between powerful technology and practical human needs.
Understanding this role early, and building the skills intentionally, puts you in a position most of your peers are not even aware of yet.
