You do not need a formal degree to start. Here is a practical path.

Start by using AI tools every day with intention. Do not just ask casual questions. Try to get specific, high quality outputs and notice what prompt structures work better than others.

Take a structured course. Several platforms including Coursera, DeepLearning.AI, and LinkedIn Learning now offer prompt engineering courses, many of them free or low cost.

Build a small portfolio. Document prompts you have written, the outputs they produced, and why certain approaches worked. This is what you show employers.

Apply for roles with AI-first startups, content companies, edtech platforms, and SaaS companies. These are currently the most active hirers for this role in India.

6. What Can You Earn?

Entry level prompt engineering roles in India currently range from ₹4 to 10 LPA depending on the company and your skill level. Professionals with one to two years of experience and a strong portfolio are moving into the ₹12 to 20 LPA range. Global remote roles, which are increasingly open to Indian candidates, pay significantly higher.

It is still early days for this role in India, which means getting in now puts you ahead of the curve.
