Struggling to find the right tutor?

We've all been there. You see your child getting frustrated with a subject, and you start thinking, "How can I help?" Often, the next thought is to get a tutor.

But then the hard part starts. It’s not about finding the person with the most degrees or who charges the most. It’s about finding someone your child can actually connect with, someone who makes them feel comfortable.

So how do you find that person? It doesn’t have to be so stressful. Here are a few simple steps.

1. First, Figure Out What's Really Needed

Before you even start searching online, just sit with your child for a bit. The problem is usually more than just "needing help with Maths." Try asking some simple questions:

  • "What's the hardest part for you?"

  • "How do you like to learn things? By drawing them? By talking about them?"

  • "What kind of teacher would you like? Someone funny and energetic, or someone quiet and calm?"

Understanding how your child learns best is the most important thing. It changes your search from "I need a science tutor" to "I need a patient person who can make science interesting." Honestly, this is the first thing we ask parents at Paathshala, because figuring out the why is the real key.

2. What to Ask a Potential Tutor

Once you have a few names, you’ll need to talk to them. Don’t just ask about their qualifications. You’re looking for someone who will be a partner in helping your child. Try asking things like:

  • "Can you tell me about a time you helped a student who didn't want to learn?"

  • "What do you do when a child just isn't getting it?"

  • "How do you make your classes interesting?"

Their answers will tell you more than a resume ever could. You’re trying to see if they’re patient and if they genuinely enjoy helping kids. We spend a lot of time on this part when we bring tutors on board, to make sure they're not just experts, but also good, kind people.

3. Always, Always Do a Trial Class

This is the most important step. You can have the best tutor on paper, but if your child doesn’t feel comfortable with them, it’s not going to work. That connection between them is where the real learning happens.

A trial class lets your child see what the teacher is like. It also gives them a say in the decision, which is a big deal. When your child helps choose the tutor, they’re much more likely to be engaged in the lessons.

This is so important to us at Paathshala that we always start with a free demo class. It lets everyone, especially your child, know if it’s a good fit before you decide anything.

In the end, finding the right tutor isn't just about better marks. It’s about seeing your child feel confident again. Take your time, trust your gut feeling, and listen to your child. You’ll know when you’ve found the right person.

Hope this helps!
